謙譲語

よくある間違いといわれる話題でもあるが、せっかくなのでここに記す。

敬語を使えない若者が増えているとかいうのは昔々から聞いているし、小学校の頃だって、同様のことが新聞に書かれていた記憶があるし、実際問題として、なかなか学校で習わない、あるいは、使わないことが多くて、なにがなんだかよくわからない状態で、最終的に企業の研修で習得するというのが一般的なパターンと思われる。でも、そこの講師もなんか変なことを言っているかもしれない。

そこで、ここでは、よくある間違いをひとつ、「謙譲語はへりくだる言葉ではない。」

言うという動詞の主語が尊敬する対象なら、「おっしゃる」になるし、言うという動詞の目的語が尊敬する対象なら「申し上げる」である。主語の方が目的語より偉ければ、尊敬語になり、目的語の方が偉ければ謙譲語になると考えればわかりやすいと思う。へりくだるかどうかは別に考える必要はない。日本語は主語や目的語で文脈上わかっているものはどんどん省略されてしまうので、慣れていないと、一旦対象を考えなければどちらを選ぶべきかわからなくなり、悩む場面が出てくる。

へりくだるとは、どこから生まれてきた説明だろうか。どうやら、国立国語研究所由来のようである。

謙譲語の定義から「へりくだる」消滅
文化審議会国語分科会は２３日、敬語の分類を尊敬・謙譲・丁寧の３分類から５分類に変更する敬語小委員会の「敬語の指針案」をおおむね了承した。指針案では敬語の分類として「お酒」「お料理」などの美化語を追加。謙譲語については、「自分側から相手側に向かう行為などについて向かう先の人物を立てる」表現を謙譲語Ｉ、「自分側の行為を丁重に述べる」表現を謙譲語ＩＩ（丁重語）と細分化した。謙譲語の一般的な定義は「自分側がへりくだることで相手側への敬意を示す」とされるが、新定義から「へりくだる」などの文言は消えた。教育現場などで混乱をきたす可能性もありそうだ。指針案は１１月上旬に公開される。文化審では、国民の意見を取り入れながら修正を加え、来年２月に文部科学相に答申する方針。
