小範囲の動きを磁気によりトラッキングするシステムを応用した機器として昔から最も使われてきたのは、 wacom等で有名なペンタブレットで、製品によっては三次元方向の動きも感知できる。 医療用にも同様のシステムが応用されている。ペンタブレットのペンの中身はコイル等からなるもので、 いろいろな所に掲載されているが、それ以外で医療用の機器の中身はあまり公開されることがないので取り上げてみる。
メスやハサミ、吸引管といった単純な医療機器は日本製のものが多いが、システムとして比較的 複雑な機器になると、内視鏡以外で日本企業で設計製作された機器はかなり少ない。 一旦設計してしまえば末永く売れることが多いが、数年でコストを回収できることは少なく、初期開発において 当該製品からの収入がない状態で優秀な技術者を一定期間安定的に雇い、研究費を支出できる企業的体力がなければ、 せいぜい設計期間が数年程度の単純な機器しか作れないだろう。
日本ではあまり有名でないと思われるが、デンマークにウィリアム・デマント・ホールディング・グループ（William Demant, WDH）という 補聴器・音響をターゲットとしたグループ大企業がある。この母体はオーティコン基金で、1904年にHans Demantが 補聴器メーカを興したのが始まりとなっている。現在は、このWDHの傘下に、補聴器メーカのOticonの他、Bernafon、Sonic、Oticon Medical、 Interacoustics、ヘッドホンで有名なSennheiser Communications（５割を保有）といった、多くの企業があり、医療用機器を含め幅広く事業を展開している。 2013年にOticonがフランスの人工内耳の技術を持つベンチャー(Neurelec)を4750万ユーロ(約60億)で買収して人工内耳の開発を始め、 現在ではOticon MedicalからNeuro 2が販売されており、昔からの人工内耳メーカであるCochlear、MED-EL、Advenced Bionics等に競争を挑んでいる。 この企業体力がどの程度なのかと思って投資家向けの資料を見てみたところ、総売上が2017年で6,505 DKK million(約1170億)だった。 日本で音響・補聴器メーカとして有名なRIONの2017年の売上高は約192億（連結）であり、WDHはこの10倍はある。RIONくらいの規模の会社でも、 比較的複雑なシステムである人工内耳を新規に単独で開発することは困難で、10倍以上の企業規模・体力で開発ができるようになるといえるようだ。 テルモは2009年の売上高が約3027億(連結)との記述があり、仮の話だが、人工内耳の開発は出来なくはない規模の企業とはいえる。
さて、こちらの機器は、Medtronicというアメリカの企業により開発されたナビゲーションシステムで、
脳外科や耳鼻科等比較的解剖の込み入った手術で、どこを操作しているかをリアルタイムに示してくれる機器である。
OSはDebian 6.0が動いている。AxiEM SYSTEMと書いてある青い箱に磁気信号送出／受信を行うすべての回路が
入っており、左の黒い丸い物体にケーブルが生えているものが磁気発信子である。
ちなみに、先程の企業規模で言えば、Medtronicの2014年のNet salesは$17,005 million(約1.8兆円)と報告書にあり、
テルモよりさらに規模の大きな多国籍企業である。
固定磁気発生装置の磁気を拾うセンサの中身は、3軸方向の磁気を拾えるよう、3方向を向いた小型のコイルであり、 樹脂に包埋されており、そこから合計6本の電線がコードの中に入っている。先端にはプリアンプは入っておらず、 3対の電線はそれぞれツイストペアとなっており、外部からのノイズを極力低減できるようにしている。 地磁気の影響は受けないように考慮されているか、磁気発生装置の出力の方がずっと強いか、単純な信号ではないと思われる。
数メートルの長いコードの対側には、本体に挿入できるようにコネクタがついており、こちら側にはプリアンプが ついているかもしれないと思っていたが、実際には、コイルの出力はそのまま端子に接続されており、 裏側にはEEPROMとおそらくレギュレータがついているのみであった。ちなみに、このコネクタは、 PCIカードの幅の短い方より一本分だけ狭い以外はほぼ大きさとしては同じであり、 PCIと互換性は全くないが、狭い方に刺すことができる。EEPROMを読み出したい時には、もしPCIカードスロットの 単体部品を持っていれば、使うことができるかもしれない。
中身を見れば、ものすごく複雑なシステムではないが、いくつかの特許が押さえられており、特許期間は 同様のシステムは販売できない。日本では、光学式のナビゲーションシステムが浜松の企業を中心に開発されたが、 同様のシステムはもっと前に同じMedtronicから販売されており、後追いの感が拭えないし、 企業規模だけから言えばどう太刀打ちしても勝てそうにないという感じもする。
