KDE標準で入っているArtsd（サウンドをbackgroundで鳴らすデーモン）が異様にCPUを食うことがあります。最近の48kHZ対応のサウンドカードではこの現象が良く起こります。自分の出会ったカードのうちチップセット統合のサウンドシステム全てと YMF724ではすべてこの現象が起きました。遅いマシンを使っていると音切れすることもあるようです。対処としては、KDEのコントロールパネルから「サウンドとマルチメディア」のなかの「サウンドシステム」を選び、「ハードウエア」のタブで「Use custom sampling rate」を48000Hzにすることがあげられます。サウンドカードの最高の sampling rate以外の場合Arstdがrateの変換を常時することになるので遅くなるのだと思いますが詳しいことはソースを見ていないのでわかりません。（或いはOSSのドライバを使えばいいのかもしれません。でも、OSSが対応しているくらいの年代のカードではあまりsampling rateが高くなくその問題が起きないのかもしれません。）

X転送ができない

SSHなどでX転送をしようとしてXのプログラムを立ち上げると以下のようなエラーが出て起動できないことがあります。

BadAtomとか言われるんですね。これは、/etc/ssh/ssh_configでForwardX11Trusted Yesという行を追加することで解決される場合があります。OpenSSH 3.8からこの指定が必要になったようです。 slogin -Yを使っても同じ効果があるようです。詳しくはsloginまたはsshのmanを見て下さい。

log4jがエラーを吐く

log4jを使っている次のようなエラーが出ることがあります。

クラスパスの中にlog4j.propertiesと言うファイルがあるか確認しましょう。

もうひとつの原因としては、複数のlog4jが使われていることがあります。自分の場合、Taminoに含まれているlog4jと自分で用意したlog4jとのversionが異なっていたためにこのエラーが出ました。このときは、すべて新しいものに置き換えることで対処しました。

一気に文字コード変換したい

nkfもいいですが一つ一つにしか適用できないので、 qkcがおすすめです。

NVIDIA 1.0-6629 x86/x86-64 driverがLinux 2.6.10でエラーを吐く

こんなエラーが出ます。すでにnV newsにパッチが投稿されています。以下はその内容です。

The 1.0-6629 NVIDIA Linux driver release for Linux/x86 and Linux/x86-64
may not work correctly with Linux 2.6.10 out-of-the box, depending on
your configuration. If you do not wish to wait for an updated NVIDIA driver
release to address this problem, you can solve it by downloading the attached
patch files and following the steps below:

# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6629-pkg0.run --extract-only
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6629-pkg0
# patch -p0 < /path/to/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-6629-1165235.diff.txt
# patch -p0 < /path/to/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-6629-1171869.diff.txt
# ./nvidia-installer

Note that if you're using 1.0-6629 for Linux/x86, either one
of the -pkg0 and -pkg1 packages can be used. If you use 1.0-6629
for Linux/x86-64, you will likely want to substitute -pkg2 in
the instructions (-pkg2 includes the Linux/x86 32-bit compatibility libraries).

Linux-2.6.12からbttvのtunerのtypeが指定できなくなった

IODATA GV-BCTV3/PCIの場合、間違って認識される事があるので、 tunerのオプションにno_autodetect=1を加えて、 bttvのオプションにtuner=15を加えるとよいでしょう。（以下は/etc/modprobe.confの例）

It's not true that those who can't do, teach (some of the best hackers I know
are professors), but it is true that there are a lot of things that those who
teach can't do. Research imposes constraining caste restrictions. In any
academic field there are topics that are ok to work on and others that aren't.
Unfortunately the distinction between acceptable and forbidden topics is
usually based on how intellectual the work sounds when described in research
papers, rather than how important it is for getting good results. The extreme
case is probably literature; people studying literature rarely say anything
that would be of the slightest use to those producing it.

Though the situation is better in the sciences, the overlap between the kind
of work you're allowed to do and the kind of work that yields good languages
is distressingly small. (Olin Shivers has grumbled eloquently about this.) For
example, types seem to be an inexhaustible source of research papers, despite
the fact that static typing seems to preclude true macros-- without which, in
my opinion, no language is worth using.
